Winter in senior transport: what changes when the snow arrives
12. 8. 2026
Winter does not reduce demand — if anything the opposite, because whoever walks in summer picks up the phone in January. At the same time everything takes longer: scraping the windscreen, careful steps on ice, slower boarding in a heavy coat, congested roads.
If the schedule stays the same, a delay builds up through the morning and lands on the customers in the afternoon.
Add slack, not speed
The only intervention that works is a longer gap between rides. With older customers, allow five to ten extra minutes per ride in winter for boarding alone. A driver told to catch up drives faster than he should — the last thing this particular service needs.
Agree who clears the snow
The most common winter delay has nothing to do with traffic: the driver cannot reach the house because nobody cleared the path or the drive. It pays to agree in advance:
- where the car stops when it cannot reach the door,
- that the driver will help the customer to the car (and how far),
- who to call when it is impossible altogether.
Write it into the notes for the awkward addresses. In January nobody will have time for it.
Prepare the car and the driver
Obvious, and still the source of the worst trouble: winter tyres in good time, a scraper and de-icer in every car, a blanket in the boot, a full tank the evening before. And for senior transport in particular: warm the car up. Getting into a cold vehicle is unpleasant for an old person, and sometimes risky.
There will be more cancellations, and that is fine
In winter the share of cancelled rides goes up — the customer does not feel well, the surgery closes, half a metre of snow falls. Record the reason, even if it is three words. Come spring you will see what was weather and what is a lasting problem.
And the paper backup
Winter is also the season of power cuts and weak signal. A printed daily plan costs one sheet of paper and is worth more in January than at any other time of year.
Record longer boarding times and winter habits in customer notes; the share of cancellations by reason is in Statistics.
