Two passengers, one ride: when it works and when it does not

The cheapest ride is the one you do not have to drive twice. In senior transport similar routes repeat constantly: estate → health centre, village → district town, sheltered housing → the shops.
Combining rides is the simplest way to raise capacity without a second car. But it has rules, and one of them is awkward.
When it works
- the passengers are going to the same place, or one is on the way,
- the times differ by fifteen minutes at most,
- neither has a fixed appointment that a shift would endanger,
- both get into the car without difficulty (two wheelchairs usually not),
- they know each other, or at least do not mind.
The awkward part: you have to ask
You cannot simply load two people because it suits the dispatch desk. Partly because a passenger has the right to know who they will be travelling with. Partly because in a small village some people are not on speaking terms — and you do not know about it.
The question at booking is simple: "Mrs Novák is going to the same place at the same time, could you travel together? You would be there a few minutes earlier." Most people are glad to, because company on the way suits them.
Whoever declines, declines. Do not ask twice, and note it against the customer.
What to say about the money
Operations differ here and it must be clear in advance: does each pay their own fare, or is it split? Whatever you choose, it has to be the same for everybody and said up front. The worst version is two passengers discovering in the car that they are paying different amounts.
In the report for the council there are still two rides — you carried two people, and the council funds transport for people, not for cars. Split the distance honestly, though, rather than claiming it twice.
What to watch
- Do not collect more than two unless it is a regular group used to it.
- Never leave the first passenger waiting long in the car while you collect the second. Ten minutes is the limit before it turns unpleasant.
- The return is the hard part — everybody finishes at a different time. Agree in advance whether you wait or drive separately.
- Discretion. Health gets discussed in cars. With two passengers aboard, the driver says nothing that concerns either of them.
How to spot them at all
By hand this only works up to a certain size. The simplest aid: the dispatcher has the day's overview in front of her and sees, while creating a booking, what is already going that way at that time. With regulars who always travel the same way, the pairs announce themselves after a few weeks.
