The morning rush: why everything rings between eight and ten
10. 8. 2026
Break your rides down by hour and you will see a hill. Between eight and ten in the morning almost everybody wants to travel, after lunch it goes quiet, and the afternoon brings a smaller second wave — the rides home. It is no accident: senior transport does not follow the traffic rush, it follows surgery hours.
Blood tests start at seven
Blood tests tend to be early and on an empty stomach. GP surgeries open at seven or eight. Physiotherapy takes people in blocks. Your operation is therefore shaped not by what people want, but by the timetables of the medical facilities around you.
The first step is banal and almost nobody takes it: write down the opening hours of the three to five places you drive to most. You now have a map of your own peak, on paper.
What actually helps
Move whatever can be moved. Not every ride is time-critical. Shopping, the post office, a visit to the cemetery — those can happen at eleven or after lunch. When the dispatcher offers the later slot herself ("nine is full, but I can take you at half ten"), most people agree.
Stagger the shifts. Two drivers from seven to three is not the same as one from six and one from eight. Overlapping shifts across the peak move more people in the same number of paid hours.
Book return legs in advance. The afternoon wave can be planned in the morning — and then it does not flood the phone while the dispatcher is dealing with something else.
When it stops being an organising problem
When even the moved slots are full and you regularly tell people "we have nothing free", a better rota will not save you. That is the signal for another car or longer hours. You recognise it from the number of refused bookings, not from a feeling.
Measure before you reorganise
Before changing the rota, have at least a month of numbers: rides per hour, cancellations, refusals. Without them you will move a shift by an hour and discover you weakened the morning exactly where it hurt most.
The distribution of rides over time and the share of cancellations are in Statistics.
